FRIDA KAHLO

RARE PHOTOS OF A YOUNG WOMAN IN THE 1920's

There is a distinct lack of information, about Frida Kahlo’s teenage years. Recently, photos of Kahlo as a teen in the 1920s surfaced online.

While there is an abundance of paintings and photographs of Kahlo in existence in a public sphere, most of them are from later time periods.

Her most well-known self-portrait paintings, like The Two Fridas, Self-Portrait With Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, and The Broken Column, were produced in the late 1930s and 1940s.

Similarly, iconic photographs taken by contemporaries like Nickolas Muray and Lucienne Bloch also depict an older Kahlo. Thus, these rare, earlier photographs help us to fill in the gaps and and see the artist like we’ve never seen her before.

Some of the images are a result of formal sittings, and others just casual portraits taken over a long period. They feature Kahlo with friends, family and her husband, Rivera – whom she married in 1929.

Rare frida kahlo

Throughout all the images, Frida remains stoic: a face we’ve come to know, and love, through her self-portraits.

Wandering through them, it’s evident that she had crafted such a singular style from a young age. Mostly, though, it’s a fascinating glimpse into the early life of one of the 20th century’s most zealous artists.
