WILHEMINA MODEL: PHOENIX ANDERSON

"People think of it as something glamorous"

What’s your story? what brought you to NY and most importantly how long have you known you wanted to pursue modeling?

I’m from a small town in Jersey and always dreamed of escaping that and moving to NY and so once I graduated high school I did. I took a break from school and pursued the arts.

Living in a place like new york with seemingly infinite distractions how did you keep your focus? Did you have a habit or daily affirmation? What kept Phoenix pursuing Modeling?

Moving to NY is a playground and I had fun but I never lost sight of wanting to pursue my career, for me that was most important. By chance or fate, I’ve met some amazing people who have looked out for me and loved me when I needed them. As well as an amazing family that’s seen me through my ups and downs.

At any point did you give up on Modeling?

Life isn’t always easy but it’s important to keep working for what you want.

What helps you stay positive and pursue your goals? If you were speaking to a young aspiring model what advice would you give them?

To relax, to explore all my interests, and to have patience. Also, it’s important to enjoy what you have here & now instead of wishing for what you don’t have yet. Take each day at a time and be confident that you will build toward that and be grateful for what you have now.

I’d tell them to find a team that is excited about them and wants to push for them. If this is what they want do then go for it. It’s a fun career!

I want to become a model, what do I need to do? Can you tell me your top 3 tips?

Practice walking in heels

Practice posing and being natural in front of a camera

Find a team that’s excited for you

What’s something people wouldn’t know about you?

I enjoy writing poetry

WHAT ARE THREE THINGS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?

Lip balm

Music

Books

If not modeling What would you be doing?

Good question, maybe Nursing or a degree in history

Did people support your passions starting out? Do they now? How do you handle naysayers?

My family is very supportive of me. I love them so much they always gave me the best advice, I remember calling and talking to them for hours when facing hardships in NY.

There aren’t many naysayers when you tell someone you’re a model. People think of it as something glamorous. I’d say people just don’t know much about it so they don’t understand how much work is put behind it. I’ll answer their questions but I haven’t got anything to prove to them.

WHAT’S THE HARDEST PART ABOUT MODELING?

Many people struggle with the rejection one faces in modeling. It just comes with the job. I try not to put too much pressure on myself instead l focus on meeting that person at the casting and being in a good space once I walk into that room.
